Touken Ranbu Warriors sees the series, primarily popular in Japan, returning to its virtual roots, but as part of the ever-increasing number of Dynasty Warriors spinoff titles. Developed and published by Koei Tecmo with publishing help from DMM Games, Touken Ranbu Warriors uses the Musou formula in combination with its own unique storytelling and lore to create an interesting, if unexpected, experience.
Touken Ranbu's story is a familiar one — a struggle for the fate of humanity. In the year 2205, time travel has been invented and a faction of the population known as the History Revisionists form the History Retrograde Army (HRA) to alter major events in the timeline. The Government of the Time is in charge of combating this threat, and do so with the help of Touken Danshi, swords whose spirits have been awoken and given human form, who they send across time.Touken Ranbu Warriors follows the exploits of a specific group of Touken Danshi whose Saniwa, the person who awoke them, disappeared, leaving them listless and powerless. They are suddenly pulled from their doldrums by a small fox, Konnosuke, who was sent by the Government to have the Touken Danshi undertake special Onslaught Investigations to interfere with the HRA’s efforts at affecting the Sengoku Jidai period of Japanese history. These missions take them through landmark events of the time, many of which have personal stakes for the Touken Danshi, whose former wielders often become involved in the plots.
