Tesla appears to have added another entertainment upgrade to its Model S electric car with the redesigned, horizontal front screen now seemingly able to shift to face viewers.
The new swiveling display was shown off in a video on Twitter by Larry Li. He first shows on-screen controls that open the front trunk automatically, which he explains is an aftermarket modification. Then he shows the new screen-swivel feature.
The screen can move to face the driver or passenger. In theory, this could allow the driver to better see the display when driving alone or let the passenger enjoy entertainment on the go without distracting the driver (assuming this works while the vehicle is in motion).
Aftermarket swivel mounts for Tesla front displays are already available, but this motorized version appears to be from the factory. Some of the mechanics behind the swivel capabilities were shown off in a Febrary video from Munro Live, but the motor handling the articulation was missing at that point. Tesla appears to have put those motors in with the latest refresh. Li says this Model S unit was delivered on April 29.
It may not be just the Model S getting this feature. IGN's Ryan McCaffrey, who hosts unofficial Tesla podcast DMC, shared in a tweet that he’d received confirmation from a Tesla source that the swivel hardware is built into the latest Model S and Model X. The feature could be locked behind a software update, so many recent Tesla customers could find the swivel function cropping up on their displays in the near future.
This feature was previously announced by Tesla before mention of it was removed from the car maker's product pages, The Verge explains.
