TikTok users may soon be able to restrict live stream viewing to adults only.
As TechCrunch reports(Opens in a new window), TikTok is testing a setting that provides streamers with a "mature themes" button, which when toggled on, limits their LIVE to adults only.
Based on screenshots from product intelligence firm Watchful.ai, published by TechCrunch, the new setting is not an invitation for explicit content. Rather, it's a way to prevent minors from stumbling upon mature or uninteresting videos. TikTok's Community Guidelines include policies on nudity, sexual activity, and violence, and they still apply even with the mature setting enabled.
"We’ve heard directly from our creators that they sometimes have a desire to only reach a specific older audience. So, as an example, maybe they’re creating a comedy that has adult humor, or offering kind of boring workplace tips that are relevant only to adults. Or maybe they’re talking about very difficult life experiences," Tracy Elizabeth, TikTok's US head of issue policy said back in February. "So given those varieties of topics, we’re testing ways to help better empower creators to reach the intended audience for their specific content."
The video hosting platform has been trialing a number of new features, from Repost and Dislike buttons to Clear Mode and Watch History, which declutter the screen and help find previously viewed videos, respectively. At the same time, there's a threat of the platform becoming unavailable after FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr last week urged Apple and Google to pull TikTok from their respective app stores.
