Marvel Comics has announced Thor: Lightning and Lament, a one-shot that will open the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the God of Thunder, and be the perfect entry-point for new readers.
Debuting in August 1962 in the pages of Journey into Mystery #83 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Marvel's Thor was obviously inspired by the Norse god, but since then the character has developed a rich mythos of his own and become a key component of the Marvel Universe, both as the favorite son of Asgard and as a founding member of the Avengers. Thor: Lightning and Lament will introduce readers to the intense and often dramatic dynamics of Thor's family, including his love/hate relationship with his adoptive brother Loki, the God of Mischief, and with his overbearing father, Odin.

The one-shot will be written by Ralph Macchio, who worked as a writer and an editor for Marvel for more than three decades (including a very long editor run on Thor), with art by Todd Nauck (Young Justice, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man). The story will be set in Thor's past, as in current comics Odin has been killed, and the God of Thunder is the rightful ruler of Asgard as the All-Father. Thor: Lightning and Lament will explore an earlier time in the Thunderer's life: with Odin alive but absent from Asgard, Thor abandons the Golden City and leaves it in the hands of Loki, who has to face an assault by legions of trolls. Thor's friend and sometimes love interest, Lady Sif, is wounded in battle and nearing death. With such a dire situation, Thor will probably have to rush back to save his home and loved ones.
