Technology always moves fast, but a new survey finds that some gadgets go from trend to trash faster than others.
As Apple, Samsung, Google, and other top brands release new models, their old ones quickly begin to feel old, driving one in 10 Americans to upgrade their cell phones every year, according to SlashGear.
But if you want your next purchase to stay usable for longer, or you're an active re-seller, a new study by Simple Ghar identifies the devices and brands you might want to stay away from.
The analysis considered the prices of over 1,000 products from 29 leading consumer tech brands sold on Amazon in the US and UK. It calculated the average value change per year since they came out, considering their original price vs. price when listed in 'used: like new' condition.
According to the findings, devices from the following brands have lost the most value since they were originally released: China-based OnePlus (-21.82%), Google (-17.55%), and Microsoft (-13.49%).
"Common problems with [OnePlus] smartphones include fast battery drainage and unresponsive screens," the study says. "Perhaps consumers aren’t willing to shell out for second-hand models when they are known to be troublesome, even when new."
While Google generally offers reliable, highly rated devices, it also regularly updates them, which can sometimes hasten depreciation. The company recently debuted a new, AI-focused Pixel 8 device, immediately making Pixel 7's seem old to some buyers.
If you want to buy from a brand whose products hold value for longer, consider Sony and LG. The price of their products declined a more reasonable -9.22% and -10.18% of their purchase price per year, respectively.
