The Pokémon franchisehas had countless crossover products over the years, and some of the collaborations are unusually strange. Originally debuting in Japan with the Gen 1 Pokémon Red and Green RPGs in 1996, the series would launch worldwide two years later with the release of Pokémon Red and Blue on the Nintendo Game Boy. The Game Freak series immediately became a cultural phenomenon and in 2022, Pokémon has now become the highest-grossing franchise in the world. Due to its incredible popularity, the Nintendo games have had many collaboration products for fans to buy. However, many of the Pokémon crossovers are weird by today's standards.
Collaborations have been a part of the Pokémon series ever since the debut of Gen 1. From cereal box prizes to toys, the Nintendo property hit the ground running with merchandise following the release of Pokémon Red and Blue in 1998. One of the series' first popular products was the TCG Pokémon card game in 1999. The tabletop project saw The Pokémon Company teaming up with Magic: The Gathering card publisher Wizards of the Coast for the international release of the game.
