An epic reveal showed DC’s newest Angel stealing the Flaming Sword of Azrael and threatening a monastery. Believing to be helping a young woman escape dark enemies seeking to drag her away, Azrael makes one mistake that may prove fatal to him. With the flaming sword in the hands of the monastery, Jean-Paul Valley became Azrael again to fight off the island’s attackers.
A flaming sword is a holy weapon wielded by Azrael, the Angel of Vengeance, and when picked up by another Angel will activate their power inside. So far only Jean-Paul Valley as Azrael has claimed ownership over a Flaming Sword, but many others seek out its power. He was not the only Angel created by the Order of St. Dumas, and this new foe shows that Azrael will never truly be alone. The Order of St. Dumas created Azrael as a way to enact religious extremism on the city of Gotham as their Angel of Vengeance. Jean-Paul Valley was the subject used to create Azrael through hypnosis and other methods as a child. Azrael is known to Jean-Paul as The System and remains buried deep inside himself.

As revealed in Sword of Azrael #1 by Dan Watters, Nikola Čižmešija, Marissa Louise, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, Jean-Paul never let go of the Angel and even kept the suit and a flaming sword. His fear prevented him from picking up the sword again and using this holy weapon for fear of burying himself and letting The System take over once again.
