The writers of The Simpsons are lauded for many things, including terrific series callbacks, which is surprising when they miss an obvious payoff like they did with the «Bort» setup from season 6's «Itchy & Scratchy Land» episode. This example has helped The Simpsons stay fresh and consistent with jokes that recur throughout the run of the series.
