The Last of Us 2 propels the original’s action-adventure into new heights with many more diverse options for players to consider in gameplay. In the original, Joel’s grappling and fisticuffs are rarely encouraged while a mob of infected are about, and level designs are intimately restrictive with few resources at the player’s disposal.
In The Last of Us sequel, however, environments are opened up a fair bit more, and there are new traversal and stealth options players can consider, especially with the use of crafted explosives. The Last of Us featured nail bombs and smoke bombs to unique effect, but one player has now shown just how effective trap mines can be in The Last of Us 2 when placed in the right spots before an encounter begins.

Redditor u/ChimpJuice shares gameplay footage from The Last of Us 2, which they state is in celebration of the 4th of July. In it, ChimpJuice has meticulously planted trap mines throughout neighboring areas in Seattle’s dilapidated parking garage, where Ellie first encounters the Seraphites. The footage begins with Ellie lobbing a Molotov onto a raised and exposed level of the parking garage, where a car and a fire can be seen. On impact, the Molotov triggers a series of planted trap mines to detonate, bursting them all successively in tall eruptions of smoke.
The footage then cuts to a Seraphite encounter in The Last of Us 2 that happens soon after, where Ellie is tossed around by a larger Scar wielding a sledgehammer. But before control can even be returned to the player, the Scar steps on a previously planted trap mine and is dismembered, landing on the counter that they threw Ellie across.
