Wingspan is coming to PS5 and PS4 later this summer, the wonderful digital rendition by Merge Games of the popular strategy card board game finally flapping on over to PlayStation.
Wingspan is already out across PC since 2020, as well as Xbox and Nintendo Switch. Both Nintendo Switch and PlayStation will be receiving physical releases by Signature Edition, bundling together the base game with all expansions – European Expansion, Oceania Expansion, and the Seasonal Decorative Pack.
Wingspan is a relaxing card game all about trying to attract the best birds to your network of wildlife preserves. You collect cards and then play them in their habitats, ensure they have the right food and then get them to lay eggs. Many of the cards have powers that are based on real life, so hawks will hunt, pelicans will fish and geese will flock, and these feed into a rolling cascade of abilities as players make their actions.
I’m sure I’ve fumbled the description, but you can play either competitively or more collaboratively, and there’s different bonus cards and end-of-round goals and systems to help you do so.
Jonny reviewed the game for us back in 2020, saying “Wingspan is a serene, blissful, drop-dead gorgeous digital board game. While its turn-based engine-building gameplay may not be for everyone, it’s the ideal game to unwind with alongside a mug of cocoa after a long day. Multiple play modes make this a great purchase for players of any age that enjoy strategy and a healthy dose of animal facts.”
Wingspan also won the 2019 Kennerspiel des Jahres board game award, and I can also attest that Merge’s video game adaptation is a really lovely one that’s filled with charming visuals, bird song and relaxing music.
