The Conners: Neville’s Proposal Can Cover Up Jackie’s Exit
It is not clear yet whether Laurie Metcalf’s Jackie will be spending some time away from The Conners season 5, but the show has a perfect setup for her absence if this does happen. It was announced in April 2022 that The Conners star Laurie Metcalf would appear in Hacks season 2, playing a supporting role. The question of whether this would result in Jackie’s exit from The Conners has not yet been answered, but the sitcom does seem to be setting up that possibility.
As one of the most acclaimed actors in the ensemble cast ofThe Conners, it is no surprise to see Metcalf’s talents in high demand. The actor won numerous Emmy Awards for her work on The Conners predecessor Roseanne and even earned an Oscar nomination during her time on the sitcom's revival for 2017’s Lady Bird. As such, the announcement that she would play a part in Hacks season 2 was no shock, but her absence from upcoming episodes of The Conners season 5 could still shake the show’s dynamic.

Neville asking Aunt Jackie to marry him could move the character a little further from the Conner family home, thus allowing The Conners to give Metcalf time to work on Hacks. As proven by Mark's absence in The Conners season 4, the sitcom’s sizable cast means the show often leaves characters off-screen for a few episodes at a time. This would be a better strategy than writing the character out entirely, particularly whenThe Conners series regular John Goodman also shoots another show (The Righteous Gemstones) while starring in The Conners. Furthermore, The Conners season 4 already seeded the ground for this by having Dan complain about how much time Jackie spends at the Conner house.
