The pandemic has seen workers move away from expensive places like Silicon Valley and New York City and take jobs in new, more affordable cities. What regions should you consider? Dice looked at salary trends in 2021 and revealed some of the top places for tech workers in search of high salaries to live.
While salaries still increased in traditional tech centers—Silicon Valley (up 5%), New York (1.1%), and Seattle (11.2%)—there were some surprises when it came to the cities where tech workers saw the biggest jumps in their pay.
Pittsburgh topped the list, with a 14% salary increase. The city’s transformation from a steel town to a tech one has top universities such as Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh to thank in part, as well as resources for entrepreneurs, including Ascender, a community for mentorship and related programs, and seed investors like Innovation Works.
Atlanta saw nearly as much salary growth, at 13.9%. It’s long been a tech success story and just added an Airbnb hub near the Georgia Tech campus.
Though Chicago is a major American city, it’s not always been one for tech. But it had a 12.6% increase in salaries in the sector last year. The city’s tech opportunities shine on Built in Chicago, a site that brings together tech news, opportunities, and information for the industry.
Other metro areas that saw growth in pay for tech workers last year include Miami (11.4%), Philadelphia (10.6%), Tampa (10.6%), Detroit (10.3%), LA (10.2%), and Portland (9.3%).
