The Batman's Thursday preview box office take is higher than its pre-pandemic DC peers Joker and Aquaman. The film, which officially opened in theaters this weekend, is debuting a new branch of the DC Extended Universe, introducing fans to a another version of the caped crusader, played by Robert Pattinson. The Batman was directed by Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' Matt Reeves and features Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Colin Farrell as The Penguin.
The Batman will reset the timeline of Gotham's prime vigilante hero, following Bruce Wayne while he's still in his first few years of fighting crime. When Gotham citizens are targeted by a serial killer known as The Riddler, Batman must reluctantly team up with Catwoman to track him down, even though their investigation is turning up dark secrets about the Wayne family's past. The film is poised to start a whole new Bat universe within the DCEU, including an impending HBO Max spinoff show featuring The Penguin.
