Taika Waititi’s changes to Thor create a huge challenge for Thor: Love and Thunder’s Hercules when he makes his return to the MCU. Introduced in the movie’s mid-credits scene, Hercules is in a position to serve as a major character in Thor’s next MCU adventure. However, exactly when he’ll appear remains to be seen.
Played by Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein in the MCU, the Lion of Olympus has a storied rivalry with the God of Thunder in Marvel Comics. In the source material, Hercules and Thor – who are counted as two of the strongest characters in the entire Marvel Universe – have been butting heads since the 1960s. He accounts for a major missing part of Thor’s MCU story, but that’s set to change in Phase 5 when it finally pits them against each other. Having Hercules around will also supply the MCU with a key figure from Avengers comics. Despite not being a household name in the same vein as Hulk or Iron Man, the demigod is easily one of the team’s biggest characters and someone who is considered a candidate for the MCU’s next Avengers lineup.

Regardless of what Marvel Studios has planned for Hercules in the MCU, what it’s been doing with Thor is sure to make a comic-accurate depiction of Goldstein’s character problematic. In the classic comics, Hercules stands out as a hero because of how unique he is to Thor, who is known for his rather serious attitude.
