As disturbing as Marvel's Secret Invasion was, the Superman line of comics gave the concept an even more unsettling twist. It turns out, there's something much more scarier than a hero turning out to be a Skrull.
Marvel's thrilling and game-changing event from 2008 was a crossover storyline that impacted a large portion of Marvel's ongoing titles. The shapeshifting alien race known as the Skrulls had invaded Earth and replaced some of the Marvel Universe's most trusted heroes. Unable to know who was who, paranoia ran through the Avengers, SHIELD, and other organizations that had been infiltrated as part of the Skrulls' invasion. After finding a way to determine who the Skrulls were, the Earth's forces were able to fight back and stop the aliens' plot to add the planet to the Skrull Empire.

As perturbing as it was for the heroes of Earth not to be able to trust one another, the Superman saga «New Krypton» found a way to bump up the paranoia of Secret Invasion with an even more disturbing notion. In Action Comics #875 (by Greg Rucka and Eddy Barrows) the world is adjusting after its confrontation with the Kryptonian society New Krypton. While no Kryptonians are allowed on Earth, the new hero team of Nightwing and Flamebird violate that law in order to keep the world safe from a threat that's popped up right under its nose. Apparently, as part of General Zod's plans to conquer the Earth, he's recruited a cache of criminals from the Phantom Zone to act as his sleeper agents.
