Language-learning platform Duolingo is testing a different type of problem: math.
The beta program(Opens in a new window), which is now taking waitlist registrations, teaches third-grade math to iPhone and iPad users, starting with multiplication.
Based on an early test by The Verge's Monica Chin(Opens in a new window), users can also expect to tackle division, fractions, area, perimeter, angles, telling time, "and other things I promptly forgot how to do as soon as I graduated from high school," according to Chin.
Duolingo Math takes many cues from its sister language app; it features a similar aesthetic, sound effects, and lesson format. The latter focuses on a set of numbers, just as you would interact with specific bunches of words at a time. There's also that familiar vertical lesson progression and passive-aggressive notifications to study more.
Moving forward, the company plans to introduce courses at different levels based on age—including adults who may have shed some of their knowledge through the years, The Verge says. There are no plans (for now) to move Duolingo Math behind the company's $6.99-per-month subscription paywall.
