In the third continuation of the popular The Dark Knight Returns series, Superman is given a brand new weakness to a substance called “Black Matter.” Compared to his well-known and oft-exploited weakness to kryptonite, this weaponized goop is a much darker way to incapacitate a hero who can usually overcome anything.
As seen in the fourth issue of 2015’s The Dark Knight III: The Master Race, by Frank Miller & Brian Azzarello, and Andy Hubert, this series focuses on the newly restored (and radicalized) citizens of the Kryptonian city of Kandor, and their subsequent attack on Earth. Demanding the world worship them as gods or be destroyed, it doesn’t take long for DC Comics' superhero community to come together to take out this new threat, with Superman jumping into the fray as soon as he's able.

Beat on by way more powered-up Kandorians than he can handle all by his lonesome, Superman is eventually at the mercy of Quar, the leader of this twisted group of Kandorian villains. Soon decided to be guilty of being a traitor to Kandor and Krypton, Quar uses what is only referred to as “Black Matter” to take out the Man of Steel in a pretty messed up way, giving kryptonite a run for its money in the process.
Looking like black tar-like goo, this Black Matter immediately envelopes Superman in a cocoon of darkness which promptly hardens to a point where this overpowered DC Comics hero cannot escape.
