It's likely that Superman will receive another reboot in the DCEU. With Warner Bros. deciding to move away from Zack Snyder's vision, it's clear that a new creative direction is on the table. The success of The Batman suggests a film skipping over Superman's origin story could be a breath of fresh air for the franchise. At the same time, there's the other elephant in the room of Lex Luthor, perhaps the only villain in comic books more overused than Joker in film. However, there is one villain who could avert both of these issues in unexpected ways.
Superman has had three separate film series. Richard Donner's Superman (1978), starring the late Christopher Reeve, was initially a success, revolving around the Man of Steel's origin and his first clash with Lex Luthor. However, that success only lasted for two out of four movies, ending with Superman IV: The Quest for Peace in 1987. Superman Returns came along in 2006, borrowing heavily from the Donner era in several ways, including the use of Lex Luthor as the main antagonist. However, among other reasons, the fairly mediocre story and the success of the then-revolutionary Batman Begins just a year earlier essentially doomed the film's chances of success. It wouldn't be until 2013's somewhat controversial Man of Steel that Superman would have another successful big screen outing, now featuring General Zod as the antagonist, and with no Lex Luthor in sight.
