Video game subscription services are becoming pretty big business. Even more so this summer as PlayStation's rollout of its new PS Plus is complete. Interest in video game subscription services has grown to such an extent, experts believe it will be that rapidly-increasing corner of the market which results in 2022 being a record year for console and PC software sales.
That's according to DFC Intelligence's latest market forecast, courtesy of GamesIndustry.biz. Market analysis predicts software sales across PC and consoles will hit a high of $72 billion this year. Not only would that mark a five percent increase compared to last year, but it would be the biggest and best year yet for video game software sales.

“A major driver of this growth is not new releases, but increasing usage of subscription services from Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, and others,” DFC explains. “The console game business is expected to see a third of software/service revenue going to Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo for their game subscription services.” Three companies making up a third of all software sales through subscription services alone is a pretty big deal, even if they are the heaviest hitters when it comes to consoles.
What makes the continued rise of video game subscription services even more impressive is its pairing with a shortage of the hardware you need to access them. The global chip shortage brought about by the pandemic is ongoing, resulting in new consoles remaining hard to come by more than 18 months after PlayStation and Xbox's latest offerings first launched.
