WARNING! This post contains SPOILERS for Stranger Things season 4.
Despite Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) having a less prominent focus in Stranger Things’ later seasons, the Duffer brothers’ reveals for season 5 prove they can no longer repeat their mistakes by sidelining the character. Stranger Things’ co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer confirmed that Will Byers is going to be a “big part and focus… of season 5,” elaborating that the final season will see his coming of age, which is partially related to the supernatural. Although Stranger Things’ supernatural conflict began with Will, the series has gradually pushed him to the side in subsequent major storylines. After largely being absent in the Upside Down during season 1, Stranger Things season 2 gave Will the spotlight when possessed by the Mind Flayer. However, in Stranger Things season 3, Will’s core role in the battle against the Upside Down was largely ignored. Most of Stranger Things season 4 repeated the show’s Will Byers mistake by putting him in the backseat, but still managed to highlight the character’s personal development in his coming of age story.
