Stardew Valley: How To Find Ectoplasm
The Wizard is an odd NPC in Stardew Valley - he lives far outside the town in the woods and deals with arcane magics too complicated for the farmer to comprehend. Some people think he could be Abigail's true father.

However, sometimes he'll ask you for a special favor! They're worth doing because the reward you get from him will usually be a special magical item.
Updated on July 27, 2022, by Gabrielle Huston: As of the 1.5 update to Stardew Valley, players can now get Ectoplasm from Putrid Ghosts! This article has been updated to reflect that.
When you unlock the special orders board in their first fall in Stardew Valley, the Wizard may post an advertisement looking for ectoplasm entitled "A Curious Substance." You won't have seen this item before when killing ghosts, so may opt to choose another quest, but don't. The only reason you've not seen it is because ectoplasm won't spawn until you've picked up this quest. This guide will walk you through how to get the quest and find and kill the ghosts for ectoplasm.
Ectoplasm isn't used in any crafting recipes and has no purpose (as of this writing) other than to give to the Wizard for this quest.

There are three kinds of Ghosts in Stardew Valley: Ghosts, Putrid Ghosts, and Carbon Ghosts. Every kind of Ghost can drop ectoplasm; before the 1.5 update, it was only dropped by Ghosts and Carbon Ghosts. Every Ghost variety has an equal 9.5 percent chance of dropping Ectoplasm.
