The Star Wars special effects team, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) is getting its own Disney+ docuseries. The VFX company was launched by George Lucas in 1975 as a division of Lucasfilm to create the special effects of the first Star Wars movie. It then went on to make a name for itself in the industry as a place of truly pioneering visual effects, holding a number of movie-firsts and working on several of the most successful sci-fi and fantasy franchises in Hollywood history.
Now, the Disney+ docuseries Light & Magic will retell the story of the company across six episodes, giving viewers an in-depth look at ILM. According to the streamer, the show will offer "unparalleled access" to the company, highlighting the people of ILM from their early personal films to Star Wars itself. The series will premiere July 27 on Disney+.

Lucasfilm and Imagine Documentaries are producing the series, with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard serving as executive producers and Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Lawrence Kasdan directing. Kasdan co-wrote numerous Star Wars films, including The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens and Solo: A Star Wars Story. Fans attending Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim will be among the first to watch Light & Magic, with a panel for the show taking place on May 27, offering a sneak peek and discussion with Kasdan and Howard. They'll be joined by VFX veterans Dennis Muren, Phil Tippett, Joe Johnston, and Rose Duignan, along with Lucasfilm executive vice president and general manager Lynwen Brennan.
