Throughout his expansive tenure within Marvel Comics, Guardians of the Galaxyleader Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord has adorned a host of memorable costumes in his fight against the cosmic forces of destruction. The year 2019 saw a massive shift in Marvel from a bold new status quo for the Uncanny X-Men to the start of a massive War of the Realms. A series of commemorative Marvel 2099 variant covers from that year featured futuristic yet familiar takes on characters like Star-Lord, whose look pays homage to both the classic and modern eras of the hero.
Initially published in November 2019,Guardians of the Galaxy #11 was released as the fifth chapter of the «Faithless» story arc in the title's ongoing run from writer Donny Cates (Thor) and artist Cory Smith (Ghost Rider). To coincide with the book's publication, Marvel released a colorful variant cover for the issue that would act in tandem with the company's additional 2099 character covers. Marvel Comics' 2099 imprint began in 1992 as a mirrored version of Earth depicting the distant future exploits of the heroes and villains within the Marvel Universe (aka Earth 928).

This Guardians of the Galaxy #11 cover courtesy of artist Dave Johnson (Bullseye) spotlights the Guardians' leader Star-Lord in all of his cosmic glory. However, the cover does acknowledge that it is a 2099 redesign, depicting Quill as if he were far-flung into the future. Featured on the cover is the iconography of several different Star-Lord designs, which eagle-eyed fans will surely recognize. Peter's main armored helmet with forehead star and center chest piece are both identical to the helmet of Quill's Annihilation era
