Everyone’s favorite lethal tournament may be returning with not just one, but two more rounds for viewers. Hwang Dong-hyuk, creator of the popular series Squid Game, has officially confirmed that he and Netflix are currently discussing coming back with two brand new seasons.
Although at this point it seems as though the possibility of two new seasons is still up in the air, it’s likely that it will be a reality. Netflix broke and shattered records when the South Korean show made its debut back in September. In just a few short weeks upon its release, Squid Game became Netflix’s most popular series to date — connecting with 142 million member households globally and becoming the first show in history to transcend 100 million views. Although the creator has been pushing for two more seasons, Netflix has yet to even confirm an official season two is without a doubt coming and in the works. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is most definitely feeling the pressure from the media and fans across the globe to bring a speedy return. During a screening back in November, Hwang did confirm that he had already been working on a possible season two narrative. Hwang told The Hollywood Reporter, “I do have a basic storyline for season two, it’s all in my head, and I am currently in the brainstorming stage. It will happen, someday, but as far as for when I cannot tell you the details.”
This begs the question: what exactly is making Netflix stall so much when it comes to renewing Squid Game for at least a second season for the time being?
