The universe of SpongeBob Squarepants is getting its first crossover in an upcoming The Twilight Zone-themed special. The franchise officially kicked off in 1999, with the premiere of the original SpongeBob Squarepants show following the life of an anthropomorphic sea sponge and his friends in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. Spongebob was a very successful series, still releasing new episodes over 20 years later and spawning two spinoff shows in 2021, The Patrick Star Show and Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Year.
Now, as announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, the SpongeBob Universe is getting its first-ever crossover event, with an upcoming The Twilight Zone-themed special called “The Tidal Zone” to be released in November. The special will be a one-hour event consistent of four vignettes, featuring characters from SpongeBob SquarePants and its spin-offs, The Patrick Star Show and Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years. Parodying the 1959 American science fiction horror anthology series created and presented by Rod Serling, the special is described as "a tale of both comedy and caution, of satire and stupidity." While SpongeBob isn't particularly well-known for featuring parodies of other series or films, it has made references to other productions, like in the season 2 episode featuring Nosferatu.
