Sony's next Marvel movie, the Spider-Man spinoff El Muerto, has found a director. Jonas Cuaron, the son of Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuaron (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Gravity), will direct the new Marvel movie starring Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito A Martinez Ocasio.
All of this information came from Deadline. Jonas Cuaron directed the 2015 thriller Desierto. He also wrote the Oscar-winning movie Gravity with his father.
El Muerto tells the story of the antihero son of a luchador who is next in line to «inherit the ancestral power of 'El Muerto,'» Sony said in a release. El Muerto will be the first Latino character to lead a live-action Marvel movie. Sony also recently announced another Spider-Man spinoff movie, Madame Web, which marks the first female character in the Spidey universe with her own film.
Sony owns the film rights to Spider-Man and its wider universe, and the company works in partnership with Marvel. These films are separate from Marvel's own MCU projects.
El Muerto releases on January 12, 2024 from Sony's Columbia Pictures. Bad Bunny is a Latin Grammy winning singer, and his involvement with this project was announced during Cinemacon. He also recently appeared on Narcos: Mexico and can be seen in the David Leitch movie Bullet Train with Brad Pitt.
