The much-maligned sequel Scream 3 featured a twist that undid a lot of the earlier movie’s plots, and the James Bond outing Spectre used almost the exact same reveal. 007 has faced many foes over the years from the comically over-the-top, zany villains of the Roger Moore era to the cold, heartless antagonists of Daniel Craig’s Bond outings. However, few of Bond’s nemeses have cast as long a shadow over the franchise as Blofeld.
Introduced as early as Connery’s Bond movies, Blofeld was hidden in mystery for his first few appearances. When his scarred visage was eventually unveiled, Blofeld became arguably the most iconic villain of the entire James Bond franchise. The larger-than-life villain was the figure parodied by many Bond spoofs and his iconic appearance was almost as instantly recognizable as that of the suave super-spy himself.

As a result of his infamy, the Bond franchise had its work cut out when the Craig era movies opted to reintroduce Blofeld. Casting Christoph Waltz was a solid start, as the actor had proven via numerous Tarantino collaborations that he had the right balance of subtle comic timing and genuine menace to make the role work. However, the plot of Blofeld’s twenty-first-century return let him down. Not only did Spectre’s worst twist reveal that Blofeld was Bond’s secret half-sibling, but the movie also explained that he was secretly pulling the strings behind the scenes of all the earlier Craig Bond outings. This same retcon was used in the critically derided Scream 3, wherein Roman is revealed to be both Sidney’s half-brother and (somehow) the mastermind who orchestrated two barely related killing sprees years apart.
