The trailer sees J.K. Simmons and Mena Massoud star in a sci-fi fantasy movie by Dan Abramovici.
The press release for the film describes it as ”A mix of sci-fi, fantasy, and coming-of-age, combining elements of classic hollywood, a la Chaplin and Keaton, with cutting edge practical effects, in a film that brings to mind classic works by Michel Gondry and Baz Luhrman.”
Spaceman uses mime, stop motion, classic animation, and theatrical elements, to explore one artist’s loss of creative passion and his journey to get it back. Allied with his passion (Mena Massoud), Spaceman (Trevor Copp) has to travel through the looking glass, and battle his imposter syndrome (J.K. Simmons), in order to truly see himself once more.
The Spaceman trailer sees the protagonist up against himself in abattle for his creative side. We get to see glimpses of the use of mime, stop motion and classic animation during the 53-second trailer. It looks like a pretty intriguing project that celebrates the arts in an imaginative way.
Spaceman is directed by Dan Abramovici. He’s directed the likes of Netflix comedy Ben’s at home and has acting roles in Sofia Coppolla’s Priscilla, FX’s What We Do In The Shadows, and CBS’s Star Trek: Discovery.
J.K. Simmons brings plenty of star power to the project. the Academy Award winner has starred in films such as Whiplash, Juno, Spider-Man, and the upcoming movies SNL 1975 and Red One. He’s also done plnty of voice work for various projects including Kung Fu Panda, Portal 2, and Invincible.
Mena Massoud is best known for starring as Aladdin in Guy Ritchie’s live-action remake of the Disney classic. More recently he’s starred in Strange But True, The Royal Treatment, and 2023’s satanic panic horror The Sacrifce Game.
