Most UK players bought Horizon Forbidden West on PS5 despite it being more expensive and PS4 copies coming with a free upgrade.
It looks like Sony’s ploy to make sure people buy the PlayStation 5 version of Horizon Forbidden West over the PlayStation 4 version has worked.
In the UK at least, 68% of all boxed sales for the sequel were for the PlayStation 5 version, meaning the remaining 32% were for PlayStation 4 copies, according to the latest sales charts.
This is despite the fact that the PlayStation 4 version is not only £10 cheaper (£59.99 compared to £69.99), but also includes the PlayStation 5 version as a free upgrade, although it will be the last first party PlayStation game to do so.
It’s possible that people simply wanted a PlayStation 5 copy straight away and/or couldn’t be bothered with faffing about with upgrading, especially since there have been issues with the process in the past. Plus, the upgrade means you only get a digital copy of Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 5, so some may have preferred to get it physically.
However, it’s just as likely that most people were simply unaware that the PlayStation 4 option was cheaper. Sony didn’t exactly advertise that detail, with the only mention if it being in the fine print on the PlayStation Store.
Even then, the PlayStation 4 version isn’t listed on the PlayStation 5’s console storefront, only the browser-based version of the store. So unless you regularly check online news sites, which the majority of customers probably don’t, you would have easily missed out on this detail.
