Sony's next-generation VR headset for the PlayStation 5 has been given a name: PlayStation VR2.
Sony christened the device during a recent CES 2022 press conference, before also sharing reams of new tech specs and information about its work-in-progress VR system on the PlayStation Blog.
According to that rundown, PSVR 2 will pack a 4K HDR capable OLED display with a resolution of 2000x2040 per eye and frame rates of 90/120Hz. The headset will also offer a field of view of roughly 110 degrees.
Integrated cameras will facilitate headset-based controller tracking capable of tracing the movements of players and their controllers, while sensory features including eye tracking, headset feedback, 3D audio, and a new PlayStation VR2 Sense controller -- offering haptic feedback and adaptive triggers -- combine to create what Sony is calling 'PS VR2 Sense Technology.'
"Headset feedback is a new sensory feature that amplifies the sensations of in-game actions from the player. It's created by a single built-in motor with vibrations that add an intelligent tactile element, bringing players closer to the gameplay experience," wrote Sony's SVP of platform experience, Hideaki Nishino.
"For example, gamers can feel a character's elevated pulse during tense moments, the rush of objects passing close to the character's head, or the thrust of a vehicle as the character speeds forward. Additionally, PS5's Tempest 3D AudioTech makes sounds in the player's surroundings come alive, adding to this new level of immersion."
