Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a worthy sequel to the 2020 hit, but fails to reach the heights of great video game adaptations. That's according to Sonic 2's reviews at least, which are mixed as the film hit theatres in some regions yesterday.
Right now, Sonic 2's critical consensus is just shy of matching its predecessor. It sits at 62 percent on Rotten Tomatoes (one percent lower than the first), and 44 on IMDb. Individual reviews range from positive to wholly negative, with critics split on whether the blue blur's second outing sticks the landing, and is worth all the hype we've seen in recent weeks.

"A massive improvement over the first film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is let down by a few bad choices but makes up for it with its sincere portrayals of friendship", reads Joey Rambles' review for Cultured Vultures.
Ian Sandwell of Digital Spy agrees, writing, "Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a more confident movie than its predecessor, delivering the same blend of frenetic family fun and nostalgic beats for the long-time fans."
However, Sonic 2 also receives its fair share of negative reviews. "Sonic’s second outing is little more than a half-baked half-term distraction tool", says John Nugent from Empire Magazine.
Jim Carrey's fan favourite performance wasn't even enough to save it for The Independent. "There are no jokes there. They’re just things you recognise", writes Clarisse Loughrey. "Neither does the film know what to do with Carrey. He stands around trying to turn bits of exposition into jokes by gurning and over-enunciating every line."
Robbie Collin of the Daily Telegraph puts it simply: "High-speed antics have never felt this slow."
