The upcoming Sonic Frontiers will feature an unexpected return of Big the Cat and a new fishing minigame. Fans were first introduced to this simple-minded but incredibly loyal feline in 1999’s Sonic Adventure, where he searched for his pet frog after it swallowed the tail of the ancient monster Chaos, finding himself caught up in Dr. Eggman’s latest evil scheme in the process.

Both this slower fishing gameplay and Big’s overall characterization proved to be divisive among fans, and the well-meaning cat all but vanished from the franchise following his return appearance as part of Team Rose in 2003’s Sonic Heroes. While Big has made a few cameo appearances in spin-off titles like Team Sonic Racing and the Mario and Sonic At The Olympic Games series (not to mention other tie-in media like Sonic X and the many Sonic The Hedgehog comics) he has yet to step back into the spotlight as he did in the Sonic Adventure era.
