There might be a brand new 2D Sonic game coming before the end of the year, but Sega isn't done adding to the last 3D one just yet. As promised, Sonic Frontiers will be getting new story DLC before the end of 2023. The very first trailer for the free update debuted at Gamescom, showing Super Sonic staring down a bigger mech than he has encountered in Frontiers before with his supporting cast behind him, Dr. Robotnik included.
Titled The Final Horizon, other than a quick look at what the final chapter of Frontiers' story has to offer, we also got a release date for the DLC. September 28, 2023, so only a little more than a month to wait until your Frontiers journey can continue, and potentially come to an end. The update, which is free for anyone who already owns the game, will also make more characters playable and add more challenges to the game.

Sega confirmed Frontiers would be getting support throughout 2023 shortly after launch, announcing there would be three free updates in total. The Sights, Sounds, and Speed DLC dropped in March, and then the blue blur's birthday update released in June. Final Horizon will be the biggest of the three updates by far as it's the first to expand on the latest Sonic game's story.
Mild spoilers for those of you who are yet to finish Frontiers' story, but Sage, a new enemy introduced to the games, and Robotnik are on the hedgehog's side by the end of the game, hence them both having Sonic's back in the above trailer. What's worth noting is Knuckles, Tails, and Amy have returned to the ghostly forms they have through most of the game. A strong suggestion that at least some of the good work Sonic did on the Starfall Islands has been undone.
