We got a first proper look at Sonic Frontiers this week. It's had a mixed reception, with some looking forward to the blue blur's first outing into an open world, but others fearful over how empty everything looks.
Unsurprisingly, the Sonic subreddit is pretty split on this too. Some are adamant that naysayers are overreacting, but a good portion isn't impressed, especially when unofficial projects have produced so many good games recently. In fact, many are complaining that fan games actually look far better than the Frontiers gameplay reveal, offering more variety, better environments, and less empty space.

Sonic GT and Utopia have been named as fan games that look more promising in Frontiers in the Sonic subreddit.
"Sonic GT is the only fangame i know who managed to get every detail I wanted so right", replies user EntertainmentIll1567. "The others have good in them but this one right here is the big gun."
"Sonic is meant to be extremely fast and Sonic GT is honestly one of the first (in my opinion) that did a wonderful job of really taking the speed into consideration", agrees BooflessBone.
Despite this, there are some Frontiers defenders in the threads. "The fact that people compare fangames to official games like they’re actually 1:1 comparisons is ludicrous", says MehEds. "Fangames often have serious issues that if Sonic Team did, would be crucified for."
In any case, we shouldn't have to wait too much longer to see what the game is like for ourselves. Despite a litany of 2022 delays, Sonic Frontiers is still aiming for its holiday launch window. We were even reassured recently that this won't be pushed back, and the reveal this week seems to solidify that
