If the next MonsterVerse movie is Son of Kong, it shouldn’t involve any clashes between the Titans. So far, all four MonsterVerse installments have featured at least one Titan showdown. However, expectations for a Son of Kong movie should differ from what other films in the franchise have offered.
Months ago, it was reported thatGodzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard was in early talks to direct Son of Kong, which was the title of the 1933 sequel to the original King Kong classic. However, a lack of news about the project and Wingard’s busy schedule cast doubt on this scenario coming to pass. Most recently, there were reports that the MonsterVerse is continuing in the form of an untitled Godzilla vs. Kong sequel. And according to Production Weekly, the rumored film is indeed Son of Kong. If that’s the case, it means Kong must have found at least one member of his species after relocating to the hidden Hollow Earth world at the end of Godzilla vs. Kong.

Kong having a son has interesting implications for how the story will be different from the preceding MonsterVerse movies. Assuming that the movie doesn’t skip decades into the future, Kong’s son shouldn’t be more than a few years old, which means that Son of Kong should be a dramatic step backward in terms of what the stakes should be. Having been around since at the least 1940s, Kong was only a third of Godzilla’s size in the 1970s when he was fighting a Titan squid and a giant Skullcrawler. Since it obviously took him decades (if not an entire century) to reach the height that he has now, Kong’s son should be too young to engage in any Titan battles in Son of Kong.
