Warning: SPOILERS for Snowpiercer Season 3, Episode 4 — «Bound By One Track»
Mr. Wilford's (Sean Bean) true power over Snowpiercer was revealed in season 3, episode 4, «Bound By One Track.» At this stage in Snowpiercer's journey, Wilford is imprisoned by Andre Layton (Daveed Diggs), who returned after six months of searching for Melanie Cavill's (Jennifer Connelly) theoretical New Eden aboard his stolen 10-car pirate train. Wilford may be deposed as Snowpiercer's leader (for now) and hospitalized after Roche (Mike O'Malley) tried to murder him, but his protege, Alex Cavill (Rowan Blanchard), revealed Wilford's innate connection to the train, which is what makes the Eternal Engineer so dangerous.
Although Mr. Wilford is a flashy billionaire who rules by a cult of personality, at heart, he is an engineer, which is why his plan to save humanity was a 10-mile-long train that would circumnavigate the frozen Earth indefinitely. Melanie was Wilford's prized find as an engineer that equaled him in brilliance. Cavill claims that she designed Snowpiercer while Wilford takes the credit, but the truth is likely somewhere in the middle and the super train needed both mastermind engineers. When Melanie stole Snowpiercer, Wilford rescued Alex, the daughter she was forced to leave behind, and he raised her for seven years as an engineer in his mold. Snowpiercer's passengers include people of myriad talents and abilities but the train cannot survive without engineers. Yet Wilford has an ability that Snowpiercer's other engineers like Bennett Knox (Iddo Goldberg) and Javier de La Torre (Roberto Urbina) lack.
