Simon Pegg Says Star Wars Fans Are The "Most Toxic" Right Now
Actor Simon Pegg has commented on toxicity in the entertainment sphere, calling out Star Wars fans as the «most toxic» right now among all popular entertainment franchises.
On the Jim and Sam radio show for SiriusXM, Pegg--who appeared in 2015's The Force Awakens as Unkar Plutt--was asked which entertainment franchise has the hardest fans to please. He said it was Star Wars.
«To be honest--and as someone who kind of was, you know, kicked off about the prequels when they came out, the Star Wars fanbase really seems to be the most kind of toxic at the moment,» Pegg said (via Variety). «I'm probably being very controversial to say that.»
Pegg has also appeared in other gigantic TV and film franchises like Doctor Who, Mission: Impossible, and Star Trek. He himself owned up to being part of the problem as it relates to Star Wars fandom and toxicity. Years ago, Pegg joined in on the chorus of people bashing Jar Jar Binks actor Ahmed Best over Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.
The backlash was so severe that Best considered ending his life. Pegg previously said he was «ashamed» of what he said, and in the newer interview, he said he feels terrible for his actions.
«I've apologized for the things I said about, you know, Jar Jar Binks,» Pegg said. «Because of course there was a f**king actor involved. He was getting a lot of flack and…It was a human being. And because it got a lot of hate, he suffered, you know, and I feel terrible about being part of that.»
