The new game from the makers of Shovel Knight looks like an old school Game Boy Color title and is a cross between Zelda and Castlevania.
It’s getting on for eight years since indie developer Yacht Club Games first released Shovel Knight and they haven’t released anything new since then, except for expansions and spin-offs like the recent Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon.
They were all great games, so it’s not a disappointment in that sense, but it’s good to hear that they’re finally working on another brand name game, called Mina The Hollower.
While Shovel Knight looked like an enhanced NES game, with graphics much better than the actual console could manage, the idea with Mina The Hollower is that it looks like a beefed-up Game Boy Color title.
The new game comes across as a mix between Zelda: Link’s Awakening and Castlevania, with Mia the mouse sporting a very Belmont-esque whip with a spike on the end of it.
Her most unique skill though is the ability to burrow through the ground, in order to traverse the environment and get the drop on bad guys.
As with Shovel Knight, the new game will be partially funded through Kickstarter, but only via a modest £230,401 goal – which they’ve already reached.
There aren’t any stretch goals at the moment and instead Yacht Club is saying that the main reason they’re doing a Kickstarter is not for the money but to grow a community around the game, that can give suggestions as they continue the development.
Although you can pledge more, a $20 donation will get you a digital copy of the game, when it’s released, and $100 one a physical copy.
Mina The Hollower will launch on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation5, and PC, with an estimated release date of December
