When the being known as Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) begins murdering teenagers in Hawkins, Nancy joins Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo), Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink), Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), and Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke) in uncovering the truth. While the pair separated in season 2, Nancy and Steve share moments together during the investigation, with Steve confessing he imagined a future with her when they were together. After the giant Upside Down gate opened, Jonathan returns to Hawkins, but he and Nancy are still keeping secrets from one another. With season 4 focusing on Nancy's experience with Steve, Dyer has opened up about Nancy's situation.

In an interview with Variety, Dyer discussed the love triangle, stating that she feels Nancy requires some time for self-discovery. Dyer said that while Nancy is in a complicated situation, she hopes Nancy's growth will help her ultimately choose the right thing with integrity.
