Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Stranger Things season 4.
The Stranger Things season 4 finale is jam-packed full of action, excitement, and emotion, but one scene takes a break from it all to focus on Will and Jonathan, exploring one of Stranger Things’ most genius themes. Throughout Stranger Things’ four seasons, Will and Jonathan Byers certainly go through a lot together. Jonathan deals with Will’s abduction in the first season, then they fight together as Will is targeted by the Mind Flayer. In all, they experience a mass of trauma as a pair.
Hence, it feels extremely well-earned when, in the finale episode of Stranger Things season 4, the action all pauses for a moment to allow Will and Jonathan to have a heart-to-heart. They discuss how much they mean to each other, and then share a gut-wrenching hug that symbolizes an acknowledgment of all that they have been through. It is a sign that, even if the rest of the gang moves on without them back in Stranger Things' Hawkins, they will always have each other. Yet, this wonderful moment disrupts the flow of the story and is in many ways out of place. Some have suggested that this conversation should have come in the final section of the show, where most of the other emotion-driven moments occur.
