Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is out exactly one month from now, and FromSoftware has just dropped a brand-new story trailer to get us ready for our trip to the Land of Shadow.
"Miquella the Kind spoke of the beginning, the seduction and the betrayal," the trailer opens. "And affair from which gold arose. And so too was shadow born. What followed was a war unseen, one that could never be put to song. A purge without grace or honour. The tyranny of Messmer's flame. And so Kindly Miquella would abandon everything. His golden flesh, his blinding strength, even his fate. But we are not deterred. We choose to follow. Will you walk with us?"
The trailer confirms that the blonde figure on the key art long assumed to be Miquella is in fact Miquella, and seems to hint that they were fated to die before venturing to the Land of Shadow to stop Messmer the Impaler. Who they are, we still aren't sure, although many fans believe that he may be Miquella and Malenia's brother.
It was confirmed earlier this month that Shadow of the Erdtree will have multiple endings like the base game, so we can shape how the story unfolds to some degree. Although, what you do before the expansion won't have an impact, so killing Malenia won't change anything.
We'll have to wait and see if completing the DLC has any impact on the base game, though. In the first Dark Souls, you could summon Sif to help you fight Manus in the past, so when you met them in the present, you'd get a unique cutscene as you had already met.
Elden Ring also recently revealed a new enemy that looks one part Manus, one part uterus .
As for how hard it will be, director Hidetaka Miyazaki said that Shadow of the Erdtree is on par with the second half of Elden Ring (with boss fights that are equal in difficulty to Malenia). It might be time to get out the Mimic and Rivers of Blood--alternatively, big stick.
Of course, we can't forget that it'll have another poison swamp, a Miyazaki staple going all the way back
