Over 50 games, including ones for the Sega CD, will feature in Sega’s second Mega Drive Mini console.
You would think after releasing the Sega Mega Drive Mini in 2019 that Sega’s next attempt at a miniature console would be for the Dreamcast. In fact, its creator outright implied it in 2020.
Instead, the company has decided to release a second Mega Drive Mini. Simply named the Sega Mega Drive Mini 2, it was announced earlier today during a Japanese livestream.
It’s not just a re-release of the original mini console, however. Aside from featuring well over 50 games this time (the first one had 42), it includes ones that were absent from the original.
11 games have been announced so far, including Thunder Force 4, Virtua Racing, and Bonanza Bros.
The remaining five are games released for the Sega CD add-on. Those are strategy role-playing game Shining Force CD, vertical shooter Silpheed, adventure game Mansion Of Hidden Souls, platformer Popful Mail, and, unsurprisingly, Sonic The Hedgehog CD.
Anyone thinking of getting their hands on the console just for Sonic CD shouldn’t bother. That game’s seeing a re-release later this month anyway, as it’s part of the Sonic Origins collection.
Aside from Sega CD games, the Mega Drive Mini 2 will feature games that never released for the console to begin with, such as a new version of arcade game Fantasy Zone.
Sega’s website says it will be out on October 27, 2022, at least for Japan. There’s no word on whether the mini console will come to the West or not.
It probably will since the first Mega Drive Mini did and sold very well. The wait wasn’t much longer either, with it arriving in the UK and Europe in October 2019, only a month after the Japanese and North American launch.
