The arrival of the RTX 4090 has revived scalping for Nvidia’s graphics cards — and some people have been willing to pay up.
The RTX 4090 went on sale early Wednesday morning, where various models quickly sold out, despite the product’s high starting price of $1,599.
Some of those purchased units are now being resold on eBay at inflated costs ranging from $2,200 to as high as $4,499. The prices are pretty obscene since the RTX 4090 already can cost more than a fully outfitted desktop PC or laptop. Still, some eBay listings have found buyers.
According to eBay’s Terapeak tool, dozens of merchants sold 135 units of the RTX 4090 on Wednesday, for an average price of $2,524 so far. The stats say two buyers spent $4,299 for an Asus ROG RTX 4090 OC, which normally retails for $1,999. With these listings, the merchant seemed to have the product already in hand and ready to ship.
Other units were sold, even though the merchant didn’t have the RTX 4090 unit in their possession. This was particularly true for the Founders Edition RTX 4090, which Best Buy sold online. Instead, the eBay listings claim the ordered units will be sent to the buyer once they're received from the retailer.
The reselling occurs after scalping for PC graphics cards had largely died off months earlier, thanks to plummeting demand from cryptocurrency miners and GPU inventories reaching the point of oversupply at retailers. However, the RTX 4000 series could end up reviving some scalping, so long as supplies remain thin and demand persists.
One reseller in a Discord group claimed they had nabbed dozens of RTX 4090 models on Best Buy this morning. As evidence, they showed Best Buy sending numerous emails to their inbox, confirming the orders
