While the Twilight saga was a huge financial success, star Robert Pattinson was not wrong to critique the paranormal romance franchise’s disappointing vampire characters. The Twilight saga effectively reinvented vampires, although not all fantasy/horror fans were happy with the changes that the successful series made to the mythology of the fictitious bloodsuckers. Twilight’s vampires could survive on animal blood and didn’t need to feed on humans, as well as being able to walk around in daylight without dying.
Some of the saga’s changes were well-received, as Twilight’s villain Aro and his supernatural powers were at least an interesting spin on the idea of a vampire’s glamor. However, by and large, the Twilight franchise’s choice to make vampires more romantic and less lethal was met with derision. Perhaps the most notable critic of Twilight’s lame vampires was, of all people, series star Robert Pattinson.

In a behind-the-scenes look into the 2009 sequel New Moon, the actor complained “I hardly get to do any vampire stuff. I don't get to kill anyone.” Pattinson is not wrong, and the Twilight saga’s lack of bloodshed remains one of the most jarring elements of the franchise. Outside of the original Twilight — which added a murder mystery subplot to the source novel to keep viewers interested — the saga’s vampires kill almost no one. The villainous army of Eclipse murder a handful of nameless civilians, but most of the franchise’s vampires are never a direct threat to any human characters. This makes the Cullens more like a family of secret superheroes than vampires — especially when they can walk around during the day without being noticed.
