Not long after finding a way to hide Guybrush's identity and join LeChuck's crew at the end of Part 1, Return to Monkey Island players will find themselves down in the ghost pirate's ship's hold. There, First Swab Gullet will hand Guybrush a pamphlet that explains his Swabbie duties before tasking him with cleaning up the surrounding area.
Every Monkey Island Game, Ranked
At first, this may not seem like such a daunting task, as the only thing that players will need to worry about is a patch of chicken grease at the bottom of the ladder. Unfortunately, however, every time players clean up the patch of grease Gullet will hurl down another globule, making it impossible for them to ever complete their task. Thankfully, the ladder isn't the only way to escape the ship's hold.
Upon regaining control of Guybrush, players should pick up the pamphlet and then open up the crate to find Murray, the talking skull. Strictly speaking, players don't need to do this right away, but as they'll need to do it at some point, it makes sense to get it out of the way now and take the opportunity to speak with him about Captain Madison. They can also mess up the hold a little just to spite Gullet, but this part is entirely optional unless players are going for the Super Swabbie achievement.
After exhausting all of the dialog options with Murray, players should grab the mop and use it to clean up the chicken grease on the ground. They'll then want to use it on the three screws around the edge of the porthole, topping up the grease after each and every swab. With all three of them lubricated, players can then use the knife to remove the Screws, which will cause the porthole to fall to the ground.
