Reacher season 2 was announced just a few days after season 1 first aired on Amazon Prime, but new insight into what that might look like has highlighted a problem for new fans. As exciting as these new updates from leading man Alan Ritchson (via Twitter) are, one detail raises a bit of concern. Viewers only interested in watching the show needn't worry, but those intending on reading the book it adapts may have a quandary on their hands.
Reacher season 1 is a relatively faithful adaptation of Lee Child's debut novel, Killing Floor—which is one of the reasons why it's so different from Tom Cruise's movies. It sees former military policeman Jack Reacher (Ritchson) investigate a conspiracy involving rampant corruption after he is falsely arrested for murder. The first book is a logical place for an adaptation of the series to start. It makes sure that fans who want to go out and read the novels know exactly where to begin, allowing them to quickly get on the same page as those already familiar with the source material for the show.

However, Reacher season 2 won't be based on the second book in Lee Child's series, Die Trying. Instead, it will be based on the eleventh Reacher novel, Bad Luck and Trouble. There are good reasons why Reacher season 2 is skipping to book 11—for instance, taking advantage of changes made to season 1—but missing out ten whole books means that the showrunners are essentially leaving behind those who want to read the novels in tandem with watching the show.
