There are many different operators in Rainbow Six: Extraction to choose from, and picking them can be a bit of a strange go of it if players are new to the series. However, the characters available are the same for players familiar with Rainbow Six: Siege, which helps players jump right in. Since Rainbow Six: Extraction is a bit different, players familiar with an operator in one game might want to switch it up to give a different flavor to the game.
When it comes to the operators in Rainbow Six: Extraction, there are currently 18 to choose from, but only nine operators are available from the start of the game. Unlocking new operators occurs when players reach various Development Milestones. Three new operators get unlocked at each of the different Development Milestones, levels 5, 10, and 17. In addition, a 19th operator called Zofia will join the operators' list during the Spillover Crisis Event, that got announced in November 2021.

Having multiple operators unlocked in Rainbow Six: Extraction is beneficial. If one operator goes down during a mission, another must get used to rescue the fallen in a subsequent assignment. A downed operator gives a different twist to the genre where players should have a few operators ready to go if their favorite operator gets captured. In the eventuality that a player loses six operators, if a seventh one doesn't make it as well, the first operator that was lost will get back in the pool of operators players can pick from.
