Nvidia just revealed its GeForce RTX 40 Series graphics cards, but alongside the new cards it also developed an update for Valve's classic game Portal.
Portal With RTX(Opens in a new window) takes the 15-year-old game and reimagines it for graphics cards that are "hundreds of times faster" now. Nvidia used new art and implemented full ray-tracing support to give the game a new lease of life and take full advantage of the latest RTX 40 graphics cards. The updated game will also support Nvidia DLSS 3 for an AI-powered performance boost, and Nvidia Reflex for lower latency while playing.
As the video above shows, the update makes a huge difference to the presentation of the game. Portal With RTX will be released for free in November for anyone who already owns Portal. You can already wishlist the update(Opens in a new window) for the game on Steam.
The update was made possible using a new tool called Nvidia RTX Remix(Opens in a new window). It can take an old DirectX 8 or DirectX 9 game that uses a fixed function graphics pipeline and greatly simplify the process of modding. As Nvidia explains, Remix captures the textures, geometry, lighting, and cameras and then intercepts the draw calls from the game, figures out what the distinct assets are, and then creates an identical scene ready to be tweaked.
Nvidia is going to release RTX Remix so that the modding community can use it to create mods more easily for old games, while also improving on the old assets using a new set of tools.
