The latest gameplay trailer for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet has revealed the Terastal Phenomenon, which might be the laziest battle gimmick in the series to date. The Pokémon series has gradually added new elements to its battle system over time, with new types in Pokémon Gold and Silver, Double Battles in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Triple Battles in Pokémon Black and White, Mega Evolutions in Pokémon X and Y, Z-Moves in Pokémon Sun and Moon, and Dynamaxing/Gigantamaxing in Pokémon Sword and Shield. It's notable that some of these gimmicks were dropped over time and replaced with new ones.
Pokémon X and Y introduced Mega Evolutions, which were the first gimmicks that involved altering the Pokémon in play. A Pokémon who Mega Evolved transformed into a whole new Pokémon, which usually meant a boost in stats, a new Ability, or even a type change. Pokémon Sun and Moon introduced Z-Moves, which were incredibly powerful attacks that could be used once per battle, some of which had unique properties or could only be used by certain Pokémon. The most recent gimmick was Dynamaxing in Pokémon Sword and Shield, which turned a Pokémon into a giant for three turns, drastically increasing its power and transforming its moves into stronger variants. There were some Pokémon with unique Gigantamax transformations, which not only gave them a new appearance but also gave them new G-Max attacks.
