When Fuecoco, the Fire-type starter for Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, was revealed, it appeared that it would break a long-standing tradition. The game's reveal trailer came as a big surprise since it detailed so much of it mere months after Pokémon Legends: Arceus' release. The starters' base forms — one of which carries a worrying implication — and the release date window are among the news that it announced.
In the Pokémon games, the Fire-type starter is traditionally modeled after a member of the Chinese Zodiac. So far, eight animals have been used; the Dragon, the Rat, the Rooster, the Monkey, the Pig, the Dog, the Tiger, and the Rabbit. There are four animals left that have not yet made an appearance; the Snake, the Ox, the Sheep, and the Horse. Every Fire-type starter in Pokémon has followed this trend, and since Fuecoco in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet doesn't appear to be any of the four available animals, it looks like it may come to an end.

Although it might seem like Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will buck one of the series' longest-running traditions, it's not a certainty. More news about the game could come at any time, including about the starters and their final evolutions. And even if it does end up breaking the Zodiac trend, the design for Fuecoco's final evolution should still be good so long as Pokémon avoids anthropomorphizing it like it has done with the starters in the past few games, so there's little cause for alarm.
